Most of the steps I'll discuss on how to get rid of mattress odor can be done with cheap and ubiquitous household items. These are baking soda and vinegar solution.
Baking soda is excellent at soaking up any moisture and unpleasant odor. Sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for five to ten minutes then vacuum it off. For a thoroughly deodorizing, take your mattress out on a sunny day. Sprinkle generous amount of baking soda and let it sit for a couple of hours out on the warm sun, usually five to six hours. Vacuum your mattress thoroughly afterward.
Vinegars are excellent at breaking down odors emitting from urine, vomit, wine, etc. Make a solution of vinegar and cold water in 50 percent concentration. Lightly spray the solution on your mattress then dry it using paper towels by blotting the mattress. Avoid pouring and rubbing as they will damage your mattresses instead of helping!
Here's a little known tip on how to get rid of mattress odor. Place a couple of laundry driers on the mattress. Your bed will smell incredibly fresh! You can also use products like febreeze as they don't just mask odors but bind the odor at the molecular level. Even if you decide to use such products, you should follow the baking soda method at least once a month to get rid of mattress odor.
